Celebrate the revitalized Birch Street corridor during a community ribbon cutting ceremony and tasting crawl featuring small bites and sips along the way.

Welcome to
Birch Street

Birch Street has always been a place where Kennett comes together for a chai, a craft beer, a shared meal, or a night away. Now, after significant investment in infrastructure, beautification, and connectivity, it is becoming something even more: a walkable, bikeable, community-centered destination designed to be welcoming and accessible to everyone.

On June 11, we invite the community to experience it firsthand.

The evening begins with a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of The Creamery of Kennett Square at 4:00 p.m., featuring remarks from elected officials and project partners who helped bring this transformation to life. From there, the street is yours to explore. Pick up a Taste of Birch Street passport and set off to discover the businesses, public spaces and connections that make Birch Street unique.

Plan Your Visit

  • Yes! The ribbon cutting ceremony and Taste of Birch Street crawl are free and open to the community.

  • Parking will be available along Birch Street and at participating businesses throughout the corridor, including Square Roots Collective, The Creamery of Kennett Square, Braeloch Brewing, Artelo, Taylor Oil & Propane, and The Creamery overflow parking lot.

  • Yes! One of the goals of the Birch Street revitalization was to improve its ADA accessibility. The event takes place along public sidewalks and is designed to be welcoming to people of all ages and abilities.

  • Guests can pick up a free passport card at the event check-in table in front of The Creamery of Kennett Square. Visit participating businesses to collect unique stamps at each stop while exploring Birch Street along the way. The back of your passport also features Spot It: Birch Street Edition, highlighting some of the new features and improvements along the corridor.

Guests who collect every stamp to complete their passport will receive a Birch Street tote bag to take home (while supplies last).

A Kennett Greenway Connection

The improvements on Birch Street complete a key segment of the Kennett Greenway, creating more than two continuous miles of trail stretching from the Kennett Outdoor Pool all the way to KAU Fields at Anson B. Nixon Park.

This section of the Kennett Greenway is part of a larger regional trail network that will connect residents and visitors to more than 14 miles of trails, 1,000+ acres of open space, and 10+ parks and preserves across the Kennett area.

This ribbon cutting is more than a celebration of a street. It is a milestone in building a more connected, accessible, and active Kennett for everyone.

What’s New on Birch Street

The transformation of Birch Street was made possible through collaboration between public and private partners, including the Borough of Kennett Square, Square Roots Collective, Pennoni Associates, Jurich, Inc., GreenRoots Design Firm, and Unknown Studio. Together, these improvements are creating a safer, greener, and more connected corridor for the community.

This project was financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Financing Authority, and additionally by the County of Chester Landscapes 21st Century Fund Community Revitalization Program. Special thanks to Senator John Kane, Representative Christina Sappey, the Chester County Board of Commissioners, and the Borough of Kennett Square for their leadership, partnership, and support throughout the project.

ADA-Accessible Sidewalks

New continuous sidewalks on both sides of the street make Birch Street safer and easier to navigate for people of all ages and abilities.

Traffic-calming improvements, including curb bump-outs,  crosswalks, a lower road crown, and a resurfaced roadway, help slow traffic and prioritize pedestrians and cyclists.

Built for Walking + Biking

New native street trees, perennial plantings, and bioretention features help filter stormwater runoff while adding greenery and natural beauty throughout the corridor.

Pedestrian-Friendly Lighting

New pedestrian-scale lighting improves visibility, safety, and the overall experience of the street after dark.

Stormwater Infrastructure

New underground stormwater and sewer infrastructure helps reduce roadway flooding and supports the long-term resilience of the corridor.
