Creativity
Takes Root on the Kennett Greenway
What is Art on the Greenway?
Art on the Greenway is an initiative of Kennett Trails Alliance that brings people together through public art inspired by nature, community pride, and environmental stewardship. From handmade banners fluttering in the breeze to collaborative murals and yarn-bombing installations, each experience invites us to create, connect, and celebrate the places that bring us together. This year, an evolving community-built tree sculpture adds a new layer to the Art on the Greenway, activating the Kennett Greenway as a place where creativity and community take root.

Art on the Greenway 2026: Reflections of
Our Roots
Art on the Greenway 2026: Reflections of Our Roots is a year-long public art experience that invites people to explore how place, memory, migration, and the environment shape who we are, both as individuals and as a community.
This year, Art on the Greenway will travel to partner organizations and community events throughout Kennett, making it easy for everyone to take part wherever they are. No art experience is required—just come as you are and add your story.
At each stop, participants of all ages are invited to contribute to an evolving tree sculpture through writing, drawing, painting, and mark-making. Leaf by leaf the installation grows, collecting stories, images, and reflections into a living work of art. The finished piece will be displayed along the Kennett Greenway as a shared portrait of our roots and what connects us.

Art on the Greenway:
A Creative Journey
2025 Art on the Greenway: Wild Medicine Eco Mural 23
In 2025, Art on the Greenway turned the Kennett Greenway into a living canvas, celebrating biodiversity, creativity, and the connections between people, plants, and place. Throughout the year, community members came together for banner-making workshops, yarn bombing, mural painting, and a special unveiling event, each leaving their mark on the trails.
Community Banner Making
Spring and Summer 2025
Through a series of workshops, local residents and organizations poured their creativity into painting vibrant banners that celebrate connection and community pride. Now hanging proudly at the Anson B. Nixon Gateway and Cypress Beach Park, these hand-painted banners transform the Kennett Greenway into a living canvas where community stories and expression are on full display.
A special thanks to our incredible community partners—Mighty Writers, Kennett Area Senior Center, Kennett Area YMCA, The Garage Community and Youth Center, Maternal Child Health Consortium, and Square Roots Collective—for their time, creativity and care in creating these beautiful banners to glow up the Kennett Greenway.
Yarn Bombing at Cypress Beach Park
Summer 2025
From light posts wrapped in texture to railings stitched with care, this yarn bombing installation at Cypress Beach Park is a joyful celebration of community creativity and the many hands that came together to brighten this shared space. Stop by to immerse yourself in this whimsical fiber art experience crafted by local knitters, crocheters, and community members of all ages.

Yarn bombing is a playful form of street art where trees, fences and light posts are decorated with colorful knitted or crocheted squares. It’s a cozy, unexpected way to bring warmth and wonder to public spaces.

Painting The Trails
Summer 2025
This summer, the Kennett Greenway became a true community canvas celebrating the rich connection between art, nature, and belonging. Through two mural painting workshops, Art on the Greenway invited residents, neighbors, and friends of all ages to leave their mark on the trails through collaborative artmaking and environmental storytelling.
At the Community Art Picnic in Anson B. Nixon Park and the Yoga + Painting Workshop at Cypress Beach Park, participants joined Philadelphia-based muralist Kala Hagopian to co-create the Wild Medicine Eco Mural 23: Kennett Trails series. These hands-on experiences explored themes of biodiversity, pollinators, and our shared ecosystem, offering space for reflection, connection, mindfulness, and creativity.
Together, we did more than paint the trails—we brought community, culture, and care to life.
